What is Virtual On Air System?

Virtual studio systems have been in use for several years in television production. They essentially allow live actors or subjects to integrate seamlessly with dynamic 3D computer-generated sets, in real time.

In virtual set technology actors or subjects are shot in front of green or blue matte background with a physical camera and with the help of special hardware and software and chroma key technique the blue or green background is replaced with insertion of specially designed computer generated 3D set and seamlessly integrated with talent in front of the camera. Thus viewers can experience the look and feel of a huge and futuristic looking ultra modern television studio.

Features of Virtual On Air System

Trackless virtual studio system
Virtual On Air is a trackless virtual studio system. It does not require any expensive camera motion trackers like other system to emulate virtual camera movements & zooming. With single static physical camera, live camera input can be seamlessly integrated with 3D virtual set and you can move around the set without moving the physical camera.

Multiple virtual camera display & switching
Multiple virtual camera display & switching can be achieved with single physical static camera. Virtual On Air has 8 virtual camera positions that can be easily programmed and moved within the 3D environments or zoomed in or out without any effort. No expert cameraman is required for this operation.

Advance Chroma keying
Virtual On Air system employs advance chroma keying technique. It has three levels of chroma key setting where you can key and adjust three different colors with different parameters. With this technique shadows on the backgrounds are removed very efficiently keeping the live imagess very sharp. It performs extremely well even with non-professional video equipments and in poorly lit background. All complex calculations of the chroma key are done instantly resulting in perfect chroma keying of live input source without any colour spills or spatial effect.

Hardware based 3D rendering in real time
Since 3d sets imported from 3d application are used as integral part of virtual set system, thanks to its powerful hardware engine, Virtual On Air is able to render the most complex 3D scenes in real time, eliminating the need of pre-rendering of 3D virtual sets. Due to its high performance, Virtual On Air can render full anti–aliased scenes giving an astonishing photo realistic result.

Real time shadows and reflection
One of the advanced features of Virtual On Air system is real time shadows & reflections. As far as shadows go, they are properly combined with the ground texture, they are cast onto arbitrarily shaped objects, and they are cast from multiple light sources with adjustable parameters for direction and position. As far as reflections go, you get real-time reflection of live talent in front of camera as well as virtual set on surfaces such as a reflective floors or table tops. These features lend more realistic and natural look to the live broadcast and production process.

User friendly interface for easy operation
Very familiar switcher like interface reduces operator training time and makes it very easy to move from one camera position to another. Mouse-over preview of virtual camera positions and movements and mouse-over preview of input sources (graphic or video files) helps the operator in errorless video production. Graphics and video clips from Media Gallery can be inserted in the virtual set by simple drag and drop operation. Since entire process is automated, a single operator can handle all operations using a mouse or keyboard short cuts.

Live & Pre-recorded source input
When it comes to do virtual set production, incorporating video feeds inside the virtual set becomes crucial. Virtual On Air offers 2 full D1 resolution live video inputs and pre-recorded sources in AVI, MPEG & MOV formats in standard definition.

Text crawl and Bitmap file overlay & update
In addition to the video, Virtual On Air offers a complete dynamic foreground overlaying module which allows the graphics files, text, crawls, tickers etc. to be overlaid on virtual set enhancing the virtual set production with information. And this information can be updated on-line through the server-client solution.

Live Streaming
Don’t limit your audience to the people sitting in the room. Today's broadcasters are quietly discovering the competitive advantages that live streaming provides. Viewers report stronger positive impressions when watching a live event. Virtual On Air provides single-click live streaming facility to take advantage of the wide audience that internet provides.

Automation for Media Switching & Playback
In Virtual On Air system two media bins are provided for switching between two video clips and live video source. While one video clip is displayed, you can keep ready another clip file in second media bin as standby and can instantly switch between two video clips & live source by mouse or keyboard shortcuts thus eliminating the need of an external switcher. In a single keystroke, you can move from one virtual camera position to another, switch video clips and handle the audio input of live and media files simultaneously.

An affordable virtual studio solution
Virtual On Air is an affordable virtual set solution that is suitable for any type of broadcast such as news, sportscasts, entertainment shows and more. Virtual On Air allows the same studio space to be used for multiple productions. A small studio, as large as 10x10 square feet, can be easily turned into a broad virtual set giving the look and feel of a huge and futuristic looking ultra modern television studio.

  • No physical sets required
  • Better man-power utilisation
  • Saves time, space, money and energy

"TV studio can be a two-man show" :- Anand Parthasarathy

On air-virtually: Unmanned camera shoots studio anchor (right), as Monarch chairman Viren Satra uses a hand-held remote to tilt, pan, zoom or change backgrounds or introduce news clips — all through a PC.

Bangalore : The red ‘On-Air’ lamp glows. The anchor begins to speak as twin cameras start rolling, each backed by an operator, with a dozen sound engineers, floor managers, editors, audio mixers and a producer and director collaborating to get the show on the air. The reality of TV today? Yes. And tomorrow? Perhaps, not quite.
All it may now take for a modest broadcast operation are an anchor and just another person, who operates a computer mouse and gets an unmanned camera or two to pan, tilt and zoom; the sound and video recorders to roll even as scrolling text, instant graphics or live clips are slotted in with clockwork precision.

Seamless broadcasting :
Next programme? The background is changed with a key stroke; one desk is now two; night becomes day. Welcome to the virtual world of seamless computer-assisted broadcasting.
Last week, a Mumbai-based audio-video solutions provider, Monarch Computers, drew large crowds at its stand in the annual BroadcastAsia show in Singapore, where it unveiled “Virtual On-Air,” its all-in one television broadcasting solution.
A brainchild of Monarch’s founder-chairman Viren Satra, the PC-based system is not pegged at replacing full-fledged studios but it will enable TV production houses to set up satellite facilities in other centres at a fraction of the cost of a regular broadcast facility. “It seamlessly integrates live broadcasters like anchors and news readers with a virtual 3-D set. Because it is computer based, the software can provide amazing levels of realism — including subtle colours and shadows in the foreground and background,” Mr. Satra explained to The Hindu.
The typical package is expected to sell internationally for an equivalent of Rs. 15 lakh. The virtual studio would also enable educational institutions to set up at minimal cost their own studios for distance learning or satellite-based projects, said Sandeep N. Ohri, Monarch’s senior vice-president (Broadcast).
